PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION
Music by Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) (arr. Setchell)
Paintings by Philip Trusttum
Video edited by John Chrisstoffels

Pictures was a musician’s (Mussorgsky’s) response to an artist (Hartmann). Today’s performance reverses that creative process. The painter (Trusttum) has responded to the musician (Mussorgsky) and the inspiration of hearing his original piano work re-expressed in a transcription for organ. Though also familiar to concert audiences in the most famous orchestration by Maurice Ravel, an organ performance combines the best of both worlds: the kaleidoscopic colours of the orchestra with the original concept of a work for one keyboard soloist.
Mussorgsky selected 10 Pictures with widely varying themes from the 1874 exhibition of his friend Hartmann’s work, and linked them by preludes and interludes called Promenades, which represent him ‘moving now to the left, now to the right, now wandering about aimlessly, now eagerly making for the picture’.

DVD of Pictures at an Exhibition, and Martin's new CD will be available in the foyer after the concert

At short notice, Christchurch’s international organist Martin Setchell will present Mussorgsky’s dramatic Pictures at an Exhibition at the second of the 2010 International Celebrity Organ Concert Series at the Christchurch Town Hall at 2.30pm on Sunday, August 8.

Setchell will be standing in for British organist Gordon Stewart, who has been forced to cancel his tour of Australasia because of illness.

Setchell has recently returned from a concert tour that took him to Singapore and Germany, where he played in several of Germany’s International Organ Festivals.

The concert will also mark the launch of Setchell’s new CD, recorded on the Christchurch Town Hall’s world-famous Rieger organ earlier this year for the British Priory label. It is the seventh in the record company’s series of “Great Australasian Organs”.

The first half of the August 8 concert will include a selection of compositions from the new CD, including a New Zealand premiere of a recently unearthed French organ symphony by Widor’s pupil, Lazare-Auguste Maquaire.

The concert’s second half will be devoted to Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition arranged for organ solo. The music will be accompanied by about 150 colour pictures specially re-created by leading New Zealand artist Philip Trusttum. This was performed by Setchell in Christchurch in May 2003 to enthusiastic acclaim.

Admission prices are: Adults, $23; Friends of the Town Hall Organ with membership card, $19; students with ID, $5; children aged 12 years and under accompanied by an adult, free of charge. To join Friends of the Town Hall Organ, contact the secretary, David Towns, on 358-5846 or email friends@nzorgan.com.

Tickets are available from Ticketek, phone 377-8899, and door sales on the day from 1.30pm. (A Ticketek booking fee applies.) Full details on concession prices are available on the Website, www.nzorgan.com, or from Ticketek.
