Organ Events

Although the Christchurch town hall remains closed pending engineering reports and council decisions on the fate of the building (and the Rieger inside it) organ curator Martin is keeping busy with concerts elsewhere.

Martin will be giving this year's Neil Stocker Memorial Fund recital in the Sacred Heart Basilica, Timaru, at 2.30 pm on Sunday, February 26. Neil was one of three South Island Organ company workers who were killed when the Durham Street Methodist Church collapsed on them during the 6.4 earthquake on February 22nd, 2011. Margaret Stocker, Neil Stocker's wife, subsequently instigated a fund that would provide special educational opportunities for apprenticed or recently qualified young organbuilders working full-time in the craft in New Zealand.   Further details about the Fund. Martin's programme will be posted on his website closer to the time.

Next month we will have details of Martin's coming concerts which include Wellington Cathedral on March 9th and a brief tour in the USA, with concerts in San Francisco, the University of Utah, the Salt Lake City Mormon Tabernacle, and Rexburg, Idaho.

Announcement from vBase, the Christchurch Town Hall management company, on Tuesday, May 17th: "Christchurch Town Hall has suffered significant damage from liquefaction and differential settlement. The full extent of the damage and likely repair will not be known until end August 2011. Christchurch Convention Centre has also suffered substantial damage. Structural engineering and other assessment was suspended last week while the building is made safe. This process will delay further investigation by up to six weeks and result in a similar timeline to the Town Hall.
As investigation continues the full extent of damage to both venues is emerging and they are now expected to remain closed until at least end 2012.

2011 Organ Concerts all postponed

The grand re-opening concert on March 20th has been postponed until further notice due to the earthquake affecting Christchurch.

The shows on 12 June, Sarah Kim (Paris) and the

13 November Show weekend Organ Plus, Martin Setchell, with Pandemonium percussion

have been also postponed due to the earthquake and subsequent damage to the Town Hall auditorium.

Our sincere apologies for this news, which of course, is out of our control, thanks to mother nature. We are as gutted as you are.
